The brand
A fast car standing still, in a city that has gone quiet.
The subject is a BMW M3 Competition in matt grey. On paper it is all numbers, and most films of a car like this show it doing the same things at speed.
We wanted the feeling of having the keys: the car park at night, the walk up to it and the moment before the engine starts.
The idea
Hold it still for as long as we dare, then let it go.
The first half of the film has no driving in it. It looks at the car the way an owner does: the badge, the tail lights, a wheel, the cabin lighting up.
Then a thumb goes to the start button, and the second half is all movement. The wait is what gives the driving its weight.
The film
Night, street light and a city with nobody in it.
Everything was shot after dark, so the car’s own lights do most of the work: the blue of the headlights, the red of the tail lights and the glow of the dash.
Once it moves, the camera stays low and close to the wheels, through a tunnel and out onto the road.
